60th Wedding Anniversary Party - Who pays?

by mmw

Hello,

My siblings and I hosted and paid for a big 50th anniversary party for our parents in 2007. It was quite expensive and in the town where the were married per their request which is 1200 miles from where they/we have lived for 45 years. In addition to paying for the party we had travel and lodging costs for a week. The party was held where we had to bring in a lot of things from other towns... Anyway, my mother told me the other day that they want to do the same thing for their 60th! Is it expected that children pay for 50th and 60th celebrations?

Asking vs. Obligation
by: Ms P Etiquette

Dear Generous Sib,

Whether or not your parents expect you to pay for the 60th is not the issue. You and your siblings are not obligated to do so. Please speak with your parents and help them find a solution that does not involve their children's financial contribution. Perhaps this was just the way your mother let you know how much she appreciated what you did for them on their 50th.
