Brother won't attend parents' anniversary party

by Deb
(Boston, MA)

I am having a 50th wedding anniversary party for my parents. I have planned this and am paying for all of it on my own. My brother will not attend since he can't afford new clothes and says he can't take any time off from work. (The party is on a Friday night.) What do I tell the guests who will for sure ask where my brother is?

Brother's Attendance

Hello Deb,

Please tell any inquiring guests that your brother could not make it to the party, but you know he wanted to be there. Any other questions from guests would be rude and you do not have to make excuses for your brother beyond the simple statement I’ve given you. Please wish your parents a very Happy Anniversary from me!
