Christmas gift for son's live-in girlfriend?

Hello Miss Manners,

Our son has been living with his girl-friend for almost a year now, we always give him a gift or a check at Christmas. What is the etiquette for gift giving now? Should we include his girlfriend with a little something or nothing at all? I would be inclined to give a gift only to our son and include the girlfriend if/when they become engaged.

What are your thoughts?

Dear out law,

Cool name, by the way. Two separate gifts are the appropriate way to handle a live-in situation without an engagement. Give what you wish to your son. Buy a gift that fits your budget for his girlfriend; something that shows your thoughtfulness. Be sure to include a nice, handwritten note as well.
