Hello Beverly,

A hostess gift is always appreciated no matter what the occasion. Do you know the host/hostess well? If you are friends a token of thanks through a small gift is quite appropriate. If it is a small party with a host/hostess you do not know or not know well, a thank you note after the party is more appropriate.
