Do I bring hostess gift to a Welcome Party with other school parents?

by Dianne
(Columbus, Ohio)

My daughter will be starting kindergarten this year. The school's PTO asks a current family to host an informal party for the new parents each year. The party is held at the family's home. The invitation reads, "Appetizers and drinks will be served."

Do I bring a hostess gift and what should I bring? I do not know the family and am not sure if alcohol will be served.

Thanks.

Dear Dianne,

If you wish to arrive with something in hand bring a small gift; a box of lovely note cards or a small box of very good chocolate candy, for example. Most of us feel more comfortable if we don't arrive empty handed and I am sure any small hostess gift will be appreciated.
