Do I buy Xmas gifts for ex-wife and new girlfriend?

by Sandra Smith

My son is bringing his ex-wife and new girlfriends for Christmas. My grandchildren will be there and I spend a lot of money on them for gifts. I usually give my sons money as gifts. Am I expected to buy gifts for my son's girlfriends, his ex-wife and new girlfriends 6 children, husbands and four grandchildren?

Christmas Gifts

I do not understand to whose expectations you refer. However, with all those people, complicated relationships, etc. there should not be expectations by anyone for anything as specific as a gift. You may want to give the young children small gifts. But you are not obligated to gift any of the adults. In the spirit of Christmas, a nice card with a thoughtful note of your own added is sufficient. The best manners demonstrate our caring for the enjoyment of others, not gifts. So a gracious demeanor is a lovely gift.

Good Luck,
