do i have to attend a niece's birthday party?

by Angela
(Dallas, TX)

My brother is married and his wife's child from a previous relationship is my niece. She has been in our family since she was a year old. They are divorcing and everything is awkward now. They still live together but they are talking about divorce constantly and child support and I hate it. My brother wants to tell me all his problems, but it makes me dislike this woman.

I don't want to go. I do not have small children. And I really just don't want to go to a jump house/trampoline place. Sounds super boring for an adult. I am not jumping on a trampoline. Give me a break. I would probably pee my pants.

What's my obligation? I sent a super cute birthday card with a gift card. Should I go?

Angela,

If you don't want to attend the party, don't. Your card and gift are sufficient. Such a sad situation but understandably awkward.
