ex wants shower gifts returned

by Christine
(Chicago )

My 2 sisters along with my ex's sister threw me a baby shower over 1 1/2 years ago. Both immediate sides of family were aware we were not together. Those in his family showed up, gave gifts, etc. In the middle of a custody battle, he is now demanding specific gifts given from his family, be returned to him. These items were given, as gifts, for my daughters use when she was born, and she continues to use them to this day. Can he request such things be returned because I am not willing to do so.

Legal Issue
by: Ms P Etiquette

Dear Christine,

This is not a question of manners as it appears to be a legal issue. Having said that, it is very ugly behavior. Unfortunately, custody battles are ugly. I feel very sorry for your daughter and hope you can shield her from most of this. Ask your attorney for advice about the gifts. While it seems petty and mean to me, there may be a legal basis for his request.

Take care,

Ms. Practical Etiquette
