Famiy Etiquette

How do you find your place in a ready made family where the ex is still coming to family gatherings and you're almost the same age as the kids (adult kids)?

Hello Debbie~

Such an interesting question! Now, I have one for you. How do you find your place at an event with strangers?

My guess is you should behave graciously, listen attentively and try mixing well with the guests. A blended family is not so very different. Be yourself. Be kind and generous hearted. Ask others about themselves, their day, their life and listen with interest. If you use good social manners as described here, you should begin to experience yourself as part of the group rather than separate from them. Those who are worth knowing will surface and become your friends. And that will be your place.

Just as important as proper behavior is a good mind set. Do not look for differences between yourself and the others. Watch for common ground instead. Your age, the ex wife's presence or the rudeness of others are not the issue. You have control over your own responses no matter what comes your way.

And above all else, enjoy yourself. Good luck.
