funeral? son-in-law's father dies

by BAM
(Montreal QC, Canada)

We live 10 hours from my daughter and her husband's dad (who we've met briefly 3x) just died. We want to do the right thing although our daughter has told us she doesn't think she'll have any time to go out for supper with us even by herself .

Sympathy Note
by: Ms P Etiquette

Hello Montreal BAM

Send a sympathy note and stay home. If your presence would enhance the event in any way, I believe your daughter's response to your possible attendance would have been more enthusiastic.

Son-in-law's father dies.
by: Anonymous

In a somewhat similar situation, my brother-in-law's father recently passed. I have only met my BIL's parents once and that was over 20 years ago. But, in respect for him and my sister, I went 1/2 with another sister and we sent a modest flower arrangement to the funeral home but did not attend the funeral. My brother-in-law was quite touched by that gesture as was his mother and my other sister, his wife. It was more about supporting my brother-in-law in his loss than it was about his father's death.
