Gift for baptism for child of a distant cousin we never met

by Cheryl
(AZ)

My husband recently received an invitation to a baptism for a distant cousin of his that we have never met. She lives out of state. It wasn't even addressed to both of us (even though they know we are married and have been for 27 years). Are we really expected to send a gift? I feel like that is the ONLY reason we (he) even got the invite. I think it was almost rude to even invite him.

Dear Cheryl,

Since this is your husband's relative, let him decide. However, you are not obligated to attend or send a gift. You are obligated to send an RSVP to the invitation, however. We are not given permission to be rude because others have forgotten their manners. Thanks for an interesting question.
