High School Graduation

by Brenda
(Monterey, Va)

I have received a high school graduation notice from a great niece whom I have never met. I have not even seen her mother in many, many years; the only communication is an occasional note on Facebook.

Am I obligated to send a gift and, if so, what would be an adequate or appropriate amount to spend?

Thank you.

Brenda

Hello Brenda,

There is no obligation to send a gift. In fact, I am opposed to gift giving out of obligation rather than desire or generosity.

A personal note or congratulatory card is certainly sufficient if you do not feel compelled by a close relationship with the recipient.
