How do you tell someone they are not invited to your wedding?

by Marie Ann
(New Jersey)

My daughter just recently got engaged and my neighbor says " I better be invited to your wedding. I watched you grow up." And one of my cousins sent her an e-mail stating that she wants to come and will pay for her own plate. My daughter and her fiance' are paying for the wedding and have limited resources. How do we tell people that they are not invited?

Wedding and Invitations

Marie Ann,

It is poor etiquette to invite yourself to a wedding, so don’t be intimidated when this happens. Simply reply that the bride and groom have planned a very small wedding on their limited resources and you know neighbor or relative will understand because they care for your daughter.

Best wishes to the bride and groom.
