Introductions to Waitperson at Restaurant

by Lesley

Is it proper to introduce yourself to the waitperson at a restaurant? The waiter often introduces him/herself and then my husband introduces us to them. He does this at very upscale restaurants and I find it embarrassing. I think the waiter often does, as well. It's fine if it's some place we go to often and that first-name relationship does develop over time.

I suppose the waitperson doesn't mind too much, in the end, because my husband is a really good tipper.

Hello Lesley,

The situation you described is more about your husband's friendly personality than it is about etiquette. Everyone likes being treated respectively, which is what happens when your husband acknowledges and returns the introduction. There is nothing inapprorpiate about this, but if you are embarrassed by it, please discuss it between you. I cannot help with that response. Perhaps you two can figure it out.

Good luck!
