Keeping old photos???

by Jessica
(High Point, NC)

What is appropriate when it comes to keeping old photos and momento's of our past (not referring to family photos)??? While going through my closet this past weekend I have several bins of photos and (at the time) keep-sake items from past experiences and relationships. I've been married for 1 year and feel like it may be an insult to my husband that I have kept these photos and items (what husband wants to see pics of his wife with some other guy or in a drunken stuper), but at the same time I feel like if I throw away these photos I will someday forget all these experiences and fun times in my life. These are the experiences that have made up my life. What do most people do to preserve their memories without being disrespectful to their spouse? Please help!!!

Thinking of others ...
by: Ms P Etiquette

Hello Jessica,

Good manners require that we keep the welfare of others in mind when planning our own actions. Keeping momentos that you cannot freely show your husband is worrisome. If being married to him means the fun times in your life are in the past, it is understandable that you feel compelled hold on to things. But I do not think that is what you meant. As you begin your married life look to the future. Keep only the momentos that you know will not cause pain to those you love. It is best foundation for your future, because it will be built on honesty and caring.

Have a great life.
