Lent my vacation home to niece who then invited friends without telling me.

by Loving Aunt

My niece asked if she and her two dogs could use my vacation home for a long weekend. She said she was feeling stressed and in need of some down time at the beach. She indicated she didn't want me there and as I needed to go home and check on my permanent home anyway I agreed to let her use it. I found out through a post in social media that she then invited her friends and their pets without consulting me. This was not a rental agreement just an aunt sharing her place with a niece. I feel she deceived me and took advantage of me. Am I correct? How should I handle this?

Dear Aunt~

At the very least this behavior was poor manners. I do not know if she purposely deceived you. Please talk to her directly about the situation. Let her know your assumption that she would be there to "de-stress" alone with her dog. You gave her permission to use your place based on this information. Tell her she is not to invite people you do not know into your home without your permission. You might ask her how having a house filled with "guests" helped reduce her stress! You niece abused your generosity and that is always considered to be in poor taste! Be calm, but firm.

Good luck.
