Med School Graduation

by RR
(Chicago, IL)

Our son graduates this May from Medical School. He doesn't have a penny to his name, and has invited most of the extended family to the ceremony. We want to take him to lunch before the ceremony, and the family will all arrive about the same time and want to join us. Should we make the reservation and pay the total bill? Do we do separate checks? What is the correct etiquette?

Graduation Celebration

Dear RR,

It is acceptable for the parents to take their son to lunch without the extended family. In fact, I think it is a lovely gesture. Let the others know you will be tied up until ceremony time.

I also suggest you have a gathering after the ceremony for the family. This does not have to be elaborate, just coffee, tea and dessert can be very nice in the late afternoon.

Congratulations to you and your son!
