Missing a first cousin's wedding because your daughter is going to prom.

Dear Miss Manners,

My first cousin is getting married this spring. Her wedding is being held just a few hours from me and my sister and mother had planned to fly out from the Midwest to attend. I was just securing some hotel arrangements when I found out that my sister will no longer be coming for the wedding because her daughter's prom is the same day. I'll admit I was a little shocked to hear this. Does prom mean something more than it used to? It seems like bad form to me to skip your first cousin's "big day" in order to snap a few photo's before sending your daughter off to prom.

Signed,

Hello Charlotte,

The reason it is called a wedding invitation instead of a command is because not attending is an option. Frankly, I understand how a special event that a mother shares with her daughter, like a prom can be to them, as important as your cousin's wedding. We each have our own priorities. Good manners tell us to be happy for whatever choice your sister makes. I am sure her daughter is.
