Multiple celebrations,one party ?

by Cristin Doughty
(Saco,Maine)

We need to have an open house, 1st birthday and 10th birthday celebration this summer. I want to have one big party because summer in Maine is so short and busy for all. Do you think this can be done? how can I separate the birthday celebration so people don't feel obligated to be part of that? I hope you can help, I've lost so much sleep over this and still can't figure it out!!

Thank you for your time !

Dear Cristin,

You do have a dilemma on your hands. A first birthday is an important passage in the life of a new person. Ten year old children adore the attention at their own birthday celebration. And I have no information regarding the necessary open house.

Frankly, I don't know how you can merge all three occasions without it looking like you simply wanted to get the biggest bang for your buck! You have not demonstrated any relationship between birthday's and an open house that might mitigate my response.

Good manners would suggest you have the birthdays together but schedule the open house separately.

Thank you for the interesting question!

Good luck.
