My father just passed away, I didn't have a relationship with him for the last few years

My mother said I wasn't invited to the wake or the funeral. Can I still go? I have 5 sisters and only 2 speak with me. I am grieving the loss of my dad, we were very close for 48 years. I am 53 and life is to short for this

Father's Passing
by: Ms P Etiquette

Hello Susan~

Please accept my condolences on the loss of your father. I know from experience that it takes quite a while before your sadness begins to fade but you do need to find a way to grieve. That is usually begun when you bury your loved one. Unfortunately, you are having some problems with this phase.

My advice is that you attend the funeral quietly, without disturbing your disagreeable family members. Try to make this about saying goodby to your dad and not about the rest of your family's feelings toward you. Good manners insist you not cause discomfort for the other attendees if possible. Other than that rule, feel free to take part in your father's service.

Take care,
Ms Practical Etiquette
