Proper attire

I was invited to an award presentation, cocktails and dinner and the invitation stated "cocktail attire is suggested."

How should I dress?

This is an excellent question! Men often don't understand the "dress language" for a different events. In this case, you wear a dark suit, light or white shirt and tie. A "sport coat" with a contrasting color trousers may also be considered appropriate if the event is not too formal. However, the coat and trousers should be dark, muted colors and not light blue or tan.
