Proper time to pay for In-laws

by Sheldon

I have been married for eight years now and my wife just told me that her parents hate it when I pay for stuff. I have paid for one meal over $75 for 6 people and she told me I was wrong for doing it. She told me that every time I pay for anything makes them mad and the yell at my wife for it. The stuff I do pay for is not more than $15 and it maybe once a month. I’m just confused on this! I’m I wrong for trying to pay for stuff? They pay for everything else like Plane tickets, gas to come see them (over a $100), and trips to the cabin, etc. What should I do?

Hello Sheldon~

Your generosity is causing the recipients anger? What an unusual situation!
My advice is for you and your wife to speak with your in-laws together, asking them what would make them happy. Let them know that treating them on occasion gives you pleasure but you understand it is upsetting to them. Ask them what you all agree upon that will fix the situation. Then do as they ask.

Good luck,
