Dear Pat,

I do not understand why this is an issue unless the person you were to accompany bought the gift with reimbursement from you in mind. However, why you would pay for a meal someone else ate? I have no idea. This is a new one!

If this is a good friend, do what is necessary to maintain that friendship. If you were a friend of the birthday celebrant, then consider paying for half of the gift.

Good luck,

Ms. Practical Etiquette
