son in laws parents

Should I have invited my son in laws parents to dinner? They live out of town and are visiting my daughter and her husband. Since the kids work, I thought it would be nice to ask mom and dad to come for a home cooked meal. They turned me down. Didn't give a reason just "no". I was very hurt. The problem is that I asked through my daughter who was very delayed in telling me they didn't want to come. Now I am expected to go to my daughters for Thanksgiving and act like nothing is wrong. I am also expected to bring alot of food. Needless to say, my heart is not into cooking for them now. Am I over-reacting?

Hello Marie,

Yes, I believe you are overreacting simply because it does not seem that you have talked this out with your daughter. Since your invitation went through a third person, you do not have all the facts relating to the issue of your hurt feelings. You are simply surmising their response. Talk to your daughter before the dinner if possible.

In any case, go to the dinner. Bring food. Enjoy your family. Life is short!
