I am meeting my sons girlfriend and her mother for the first time. The girlfriend has invited me to join her and her mother for lunch to celebrate her mothers birthday. Should I bring a gift?

No, taking a gift is not appropriate in this situation. Giving her a card with a personal note when others present their gifts will let her know you are aware of the specialness of the occasion and would be a lovely gesture.
