Mrs. Piccola-

I do not believe there is any hard and fast rule on this topic. In most situations, guests are served first. If the children are seated at a separate table they may be served simultaneously.

However, at a family gathering you may experience less formality where rigid etiquette does not rule. Family traditions may relax the rules making this discussion mute.
