Addressing an Envelope to Master or Mr.

by Angela

When I send cards to young boys I always address the envelope to Master (name of child). At what age does it become acceptable to address the envelope to Mr. (name of male)?

Dear Angela,

How sweet that you are using the title "Master" when writing to young boys. I see that so rarely these days. I believe there is a transition between "Master" and "Mr." where you simply use the young man's name without title, most likely by age 13. I do not think boys aged 14-18 years welcome the title Master nor do they feel Mr. is appropriate. Having said that, use your own judgement. Up to age 18, the title you use should fit the child/young adult. Please remember, we are discussing Practical Etiquette here, not protocol.

Thank you for your interesting question.
