anniversary brunch

by flo

we were invited to an anniversary brunch and found out we had to pay our tab $140.00! I found this to be rude. If we were expected to pay they could have chosen a less expensive place and given us advance warning. We're on a budget and this really put a dent in it. They are good friends but all the more reason to be more considerate.

Check Paying
by: Ms P Etiquette

Hello Flo,

What can I say!? Your good friends made a gross breach in etiquette. This should NEVER happen. I can only assume they did not know any better. At least, that is the kindest consideration of the event. Of course, there is nothing you can do because any approach that reveals their poor etiquette would be your breach of good manners.

Put this experience away for now. Later use it as a warning the next time they invite you to join them. Make certain you know who pays the bill.

Surprised at being handed a bill when invited to a function
by: Anonymous

We experienced a similar event. We were invited to join our friends at a nice restaurant, their choice of venue, to celebrate their son's graduation. At the end of the evening we were handed a $120 bill. We are retired civil servants living on a fixed income; our friends are extremely wealthy. We will put this behind us, as suggested; however, how do prevent this from occurring again? What is the polite way of asking ahead of time, when we are invited to attend a function, about paying the bill and if we are expected to pay, how do we bow out gracefully? Thanks
