Black Tie Affair - Dress Code

by John
(Easton, PA USA)

My fiancé and I are going to a Black Tie affair in Wyoming. My typical formal dress attire is Scottish Highland dress, actually its my only formal dress attire. I have worn Highland dress at black tie functions all over the country and the world for that matter. I thought it was widely accepted as appropriate black tie apparel. But my fiancé things that it will be 'embarrassing' because I will have a kilt on in Wyoming. Should I wear a standard tux or just go ahead and wear the Scottish Highland dress I have always worn.

Hello John,

Since you have worn your traditional Scottish Highland dress all over the country and the world, I doubt that you would have any problem in Wyoming. However, you fiancée is clearly uncomfortable with your decision. Perhaps you two can discuss this to a compromise? There is no etiquette rule against traditional Scottish Dress Clothing at the black tie affairs.

Good luck,
Ms. Practical Etiquette
