Calculating a Tip when using Discounts

We often use discounts (AARP, AAA, coupons) when dining out. On occasion, it's a buy one, get one free deal. My opinion is that the tip should be based on the bill before the discount is applied. Otherwise the waitperson is cheated out of a portion of their tip. Others disagree and say that the tip is based on what you actually pay for the meal. What is proper?

Hello again, Lesley,

Always tip on the retail amount, not the discounted total. The server provides the same attention no matter what the diner pays for the meal. It is highly inappropriate to do otherwise.
Thank you for brining up this topic. I believe the answer will help others understand the etiquette involved with discounted services that are tipped.
