Is the soup spoon dipped away from the diner at the further side of the bowl and then raised to the lips to sip? Is a round soup spoon used for all varieties of soup? How necessary is all of this? Thank you.

Soup Manners
by: Ms P Etiquette

Dear Soup Eater,

Let's start with your last question. This is not terribly necessary except for formal dining. Practically speaking, good manners suggest you avoid making noises when eating soup and that you put your round spoon on the plate holding the soup bowel when finished. Moving away from yourself to the far edge of the bowel before bringing the soup to your mouth is regarded as the "proper way to eat soup" by some. Either method is considered good manners.
