Do I need to buy my teen daughter's boyfriend a holiday gift?

by Nanette
(Grand Rapids MI)

My daughter is about to turn 16 and is a sophomore in High School. She has been dating a boy for about six months, but they have known each other for about 3 years. I use the term dating loosely because they are both so active that they have only gone out about 4 times, and the rest of their their time together is spent at church or youth group once a week or on line face timing while doing homework. They go to other schools, but refer to each other as boyfriend/girlfriend. The holidays are coming up, and I am trying to figure out if a gift from me to the boyfriend is appropriate. I have some specialty cookies I bake every year that I was going to give to his family for the holiday, but was unsure about the appropriateness of a gift from me to him. She is getting him a gift.

Christmas Gift

Dear Nanette,

Gift giving is a personal choice. As you rightly state, they are "dating", but that does not obligate you to give a gift. There really is no circumstance in which you are "obligated" to give a gift. If you feel it would be appropriate to give a gift, then do so. I am sure the specialty holiday cookies will be appreciated by all.

Happy Holidays!
