Graduation etiquette confusion

by Confused friend in
(Georgia)

A close friend has sent both me and other of her friends graduation announcements not for her child, but for her niece who is graduating. My friend has no children of her own and is very close to her niece. I have never met her niece but she has spoken of her often...some of the others have met her niece. My friend sends gifts to everyone for their children. What is the proper way to respond to this announcement for her niece.

Dear Confused Friend,

This is a different situation. At the end of the day, the gift giver decides what is appropriate. Typically, for graduation, when the person is not a close relationship, a card is sufficient.

Kind regards,
Ms. Practical Etiquette
