Gum chewing co-worker

by Frustrated in LA
(Los Angeles, CA)

I have a co-worker who sits next to me that chews gum all day at work, and she chews with her mouth open and makes smacking sounds constantly. How can I politely ask her to chew with her mouth closed without embarrassing her or making her feel bad?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Dear Frustrated,

There is only one way to approach your co-worker on this delicate topic; with kindness and sensitivity. Let her know you just want the two of you to be comfortable while working close to each other however, you are distracted by the noise of her gum chewing. Let her know that you understand she had no idea this was bothering you so she doesn't feel like she had done something wrong. Ask her politely if she could try to chew noiselessly, you would be ever so grateful. If you cannot resolve this between the 2 of you, please speak with your supervisor.

Wishing you success!
