my husband's niece is good friends with my ex's wife...

by Erin
(wi, usa)

Should I be bothered (really irritated) that my niece, my husband's brother's daughter, is really good friends with my ex whom I was in a 7yr relationship with's wife. I feel jealous I guess that my niece has lived with me... And now she's friends with her.... Her husband hurt me emotionally through the entire course of our relationship. So I'm jilted.... Should I be upset? Isn't it an unspoken rule for loved ones to blacklist family's ex's and anyone associated with the ex?

Dear Erin:

First, I am having trouble following who hurt whom in your family story. Therefore, I will say that it is never a rule, unspoken or otherwise to blacklist a family because they are related to one of two people who have split up. I suggest you decide for yourself how you feel. And allow the other family members to do the same. You will all be happier in the end.

I'm not blacklisting family. My question was is it an unspoken rule that family members should avoid being friends with another family member's ex and anyone associated with the ex. Should my niece not have become friends with my ex boyfriend's new wife?
