should I be unpset about my cousins choosing her sport commitment over by sweet sixteen party

by Liv Armstrong
(Long valley NJ)

My cousin is a junior in High school on the color guard team. My sweet sixteen party is on a Saturday night from 7 to 11pm. She told me she could not come to my party because, she has practice from 9am in the morning then a game and then practice again at night. She has an SAT class to take at 9:30am on Sunday. This is her schedule every weekend until November. I can't believe that the school would make the kids work all day every Saturday!

How is she going to have fun in High School? Are sporting events taking over our lives?

Hi Liv,

Congratulations on your 16th birthday!

One of the signs of a good person is if they live up to their commitments. Your cousin apparently fits that description. I understand how important a Sweet Sixteen party is and I must assume that you and your cousin are very tight, hence your disappointment. Respect her for her decision and do not let this come between the two of you. Enjoy your party with those who can come and focus on that. There will be other times you and your cousin can get together.
