Should I feel obligated

by Ken
(West Palm Beach FL)

Our son has an upcoming 50th birthday. His wife wants to have a surprise party for him. My wife said yes, we would attend without informing me prior to saying yes. They live 1500 miles away. As a father aged 79, should I feel obligated to attend, Its not only the cost $1000 plus, but the travel to airports etc. in addition to staying at some one's house we have never met. Am I being unreasonable to not want to go?

Dear Ken,

How unfortunate that your wife did not consult you prior to accepting the invitation. However, there is no rule against changing the response to "not attending". The issues around travel today can be daunting for anyone and your accommodations stressful. Please discuss this with your wife in a heart to heart and explain to your son why you are not attending.
