Should I send a gift for my boyfriend's newborn nephew?

My boyfriend and I are 20-21 years old and his sister had her first child. When his mother went to visit his sister and family abroad, he asked them to get something for me and they did. His mom will be going to visit the sister again soon. Should I send something for the kid? A small teddy or something?

Neither his sister nor his parents know about us. Will it be ethical to send something? Or will it be too cocky or inappropriate. His mom had told my mother when the kid was born so I guess in a way parents are involved. His mother has some idea about our relationship but we can't be too sure.

What is the right thing to do?

Hello Undecided,

After reading your question several times the only conclusion I see fitting of the occasion is for you to do nothing. Please do not send a gift to the child of person you do not know and whose birth was not announced to you directly. Causing family strife, especially during a family celebratory time, is just rude. Based on your question, there seems to be a strong possibility of that happening. And I say this without even knowing why your relationship is a secret.

Thanks for your unusual question.
