Surprise birthday party leaving twin sibling out

by Laura
(Columbia SC USA)

My daughter in law wants to throw a surprise thirtieth birthday party for my son who has a twin sister, and not have it for the sister also. Do you think it's appropriate for her to plan a birthday party, when the twins always celebrate together?

Dear Laura,

Thank you for your question. Your daughter in law is doing nothing wrong by wanting to surprise her husband. That being said, perhaps you may want to speak with her about your family traditions and offer to help in the planning to expand the party to include the twin sister (daughter). For better or worse, family dynamics change when the children start getting married. This may be one of them.

Good luck!
