Too late for college graduation party?

(Illinois)

We have friends whose son graduated from college in May, 2018. Now, more than a year later, his parents are having a gradution party for him. He started a new job the August after he graduated and moved to another state, so this couples friends just figured their son did not want a graduation party.

It seems kind of tacky to have one now so long after he graduated. I would appreciate your thoughts on this.

Thank you for any suggestions,
Perplexed

Graduation Party
by: Ms P Etiquette

Dear Perplexed,

I would agree that typically, the party occurs around the time of the graduation. In this case, however, the young man immediately moved away to start his career. The family still wants to celebrate his achievements, so it is really at the discretion of the person wishing to give the party when they do it. Perhaps now was the first chance that could happen. I do not know of any time clock that is ticking outside of which the party cannot be celebrated. Not only did he graduate, but also was hired to begin his career. In this day and age, seems like a reason to celebrate.
