Trying to keep the Peace

by Nana
(NY)

My daughter is having a first birthday party for my granddaughter.

She is dealing with how to ask someone not to bring "strangers" to this party. Her sister-in-laws boyfriend has a tendency to invite his family members and their children to parties without asking. These are people my daughter does not know. She wants to be delicate about requesting that this does not happen without causing too much of a problem. Any suggestions?

Party Invitation
by: Ms P Etiquette

Dear Nana,

Thank you for your question. It seems strange that the sister-in-law's boyfriend would take it upon himself to invite people (even if it is family) to a party he is not hosting.

Your daughter should have a conversation with her sister in law and explain that she has determined the guest list and would appreciate it if the party would be for those invited and not extend beyond that. Do not mention the "strangers" part, but just explain that the guest list has been determined by her and her husband and she would like to keep it to that number.

Hope this helps and enjoy the first birthday!
