Wedding gifts AND shower gifts for former DIL and her fiance'?

Our son died 3 1/2 years ago and our daughter-in-law is getting remarried to a very wonderful man. He seems to be an answer to our prayers for her. We want to get them gifts from their registry while there are some still available in our price range. The gifts would be delivered to our DIL's home about 6 weeks prior to the wedding. What should we write in the card that will accompany the gifts? If we send these gifts now, am I obligated to also send something in response to a bridal shower invitation even if I do not attend?

Thank you for your help.

Hello In Laws,

I am so sorry for the lose of your son. And how lovely to read that you are happy with your former daughter in law's choice of a new wonderful man.

Regarding gift obligations: Sending a gift from the registry is a sweet, generous idea. It seems this comes from your hearts, which is the very definition of gift giving. You do not have to send another gift at bridal shower time if you don't wish to do so. Send her a personal note letting her know you wish her every happiness. She will treasure that, I am sure.
