Wedding shower

My nephew is getting married on a cruise ship (in dock) with a limited number of invited guests. His father (my brother) is wanting my daughter and myself to give the couple a wedding shower BEFORE the wedding and invite family and friends that are not invited to the wedding. I want to give the couple a reception AFTER (a couple of weeks after) the wedding and invite everyone that is not invited to the wedding. What is proper?

Thank You,
Micki in Mississippi

Reception Protocol
by: Ms P Etiquette

Dear Auntie,

You are correct. The proper protocol is hosting a reception after the wedding so the bride and groom can be introduced to friends & family. Invitations usually go to those who were not at the wedding ceremony, including invited guests who missed the wedding and those who were not included at the ceremony. I am sure it will be a lovely time for all.
