when is theproper time to express sympathy for death of step parents sister?

My sister died and I would like to know when would be the proper time my step daughter (aged 55) and my step granddaughter aged 22 to express their condolences. I have raised my step daughter since she was six years old and my granddaughter has been like a much beloved child all of her life. They reside in very close proximity to me and are frequent visitors to my home. They can phone me at any time and are no more than 30 minutes away by car. They were aware of the passing of my sister the day that she died. Thank you very much.

Expressing Condolences

Hello Arthur,

I assume this question arises because you have not heard from your step daughter or granddaughter since your sister's death. Of course the best time to express sympathy for the loss of a family member is "as soon as possible". Do you have any idea why they are staying away? Perhaps they do not know how to talk with you or what to say? Please call them if you are concerned. Simply tell them you wanted to make certain they had heard the news. This way you can prevent any breech in your seemingly solid relationship with them and help them do the right thing.
