when to bring a date

by helen

I've been invited to attend an uncles 80th birthday dinner at a restaurant with immediate family and a few close family members. Should I bring a date with me as I have been seeing this man for several months now. He has not met them yet.

Invitation and Attendance

Dear Helen,

This is an interesting question. My first thought is that it depends upon your relationship with your uncle and his immediate family. For example, if you are all close, then it may be permissible to show up with a date. However, unless the invitation invited you plus a guest, you must ask the organizer of the dinner for permission. It is very poor etiquette to simply show up with an uninvited guest!
