Stephanie,

No one can tell you how much to give. Just give from your heart while keeping your budget in mind.

If you want the money to actually go to the child, open a savings account in her/his name and begin contributions that the child can use for their own needs as they get a little older. Each holiday can be a reason for a deposit and it does not have to be a large amount. Every kid loves having some independence to express themselves without asking permission. Now that is a great gift!
