It can be rude for one to put his feet on the furniture whether shod or unshod. The circumstances may dictate the answer in each individual situation. For example, in a casual situation such as a beach cottage, feet on the furniture may be acceptable to the cottage owner. In the living room of a friends home this could be very rude. Everyone should consider it bad form to put their feet on the other's furniture, and in their own home when in the presence of others. The best advice I can give is to ask permission where appropriate. If someone is in your home with their feet on your furniture which you find offensive, request he/she stop.

Thank you for this interesting question.
