Birthday dinner etiquette

Dear Ms. Manners,

I invited 6 of my friends to go to a $$$ restaurant. We all take each other to dinner on our birthdays but now I am feeling guilty that this is a more expensive restaurant. Should I make it clear I plan to buy my own dinner?

Birthday Restaurant

Dear Perplexed,

Proper practical etiquette would have been choosing a restaurant similar to those previously used by your friends. Making a point of buying your own dinner is highly inappropriate as it may cause embarrassment among your friends. I suggest you change the venue.

Happy birthday!
