My boyfriends ex wife has invited us to their daughters 6th birthday party. I wouldn't feel right showing up empty handed. What is an appropriate hostess gift to bring his ex wife?

I do not believe you need take a "hostess" gift, however bringing the birthday girl a present is appropriate. Her father can surely give you some ideas for a gift. Little children like presents and always appreciate receiving them. I think that is sufficient.

Following the event you can write your boyfriend's former spouse a thank you note for being invited to the party if you wish, but this is not always done. You will know what to do after you attend the party.
