Gift Goving is a Choice
by: Ms P Etiquette

Dear Kim~

I am asked this question frequently at this time of the year. And the answer is always the same. Gift giving is a choice and should be done out of sentiment for the recipient and/or their family. We all know there are expectations for gift giving but those should not overrule your own feelings.

According to practical etiquette, the engaged couple should not be expecting gifts at all. A note or card expressing your good wishes for their happiness is the only "right thing to do". Anything more is truly your descretion. Even a wedding gift is optional in the eyes of etiquette as long as you mark the special event in some other way. I do not believe you need be concerned about how many gifts you give the couple; simply follow your own heart and budget.

Thank you for your question, Kim.
